Recess Duty or Greek Vacation?
This photo is brought to you via an eighth grade student who swiped left on my phone and opened the camera setting. He proclaimed himself my photographer for the course of recess.
Outfit Title: Greek Island Vibes
Jeans: White denim with the right amount of stretch. Rolled the cuff to highlight the boots. Price: $4.50 via thrift store.
Booties: These are Carlos Santana boots. I bought them from Ross over five years ago. They are suede and grey. Oh, and they have fringe. My hippy soul is a sucker for fringe.
Shirt: This is a recent purchase from a recent thrift store explore. It is linen and has the cutest shoulder detail. Only complaint is that it's an extra-small...and I don't have extra-small shoulders or an extra-small chest. But hey, gotta make it work.
Comment from my photographer: "Ms. Montoya, pose. We'll caption it, 'Hat so big, I can't see the middle school haters.'"

Blushing in September
Outfit Title: Blushing in September
Dress: A thrift store find! I bought this comfortable and flattering baby for a total of $3.50.
Boots: They are a tan suede with a thick chunky heel. This is their third fall season. I bought them for $45 from Off Broadway. Money well spent.
Belt: It's a grapefruit pink color and those little gold studs you see are little lion heads. It's glorious and wish I wore it more. It's definitely a statement piece and it elevate this dress!
Accessories: Gold hoops. Classic Brianna. And a gold bracelet just to tie it together.

"I've always believed that the universe invented the color red solely for Latinas"
-Junot Diaz
My most consistent accessory is a pair of gold hoops which are accompanied by bright red lipstick. On this day, I decided to mix it up just a little bit. I decided to substitute my bright red lipstick (that you cannot see under my mask) and wear my red in my accessories for the day.
These hoops are made of a cornhusk material that was dyed a brilliant bright red. There are a total of eight tassels on each hoop and they hang in such a way that is both elegant and funky. The waist length necklace is made of three thick red cords. At the bottom of the necklace's loop there sits a string of small gold cylinder beads. It's a simple piece, but it is striking against the simplicity of my floor length maxi dress.
These red pieces are among my favorites in my accessory collection. Their color makes a statement and I believe it captures a few aspects of my personality: passionate, expressive, proudly Latina, and bringing some fun into the mundanities of everyday life.

Hair Chop
"You did that yourself?! You're crazy! You're brave!".
Long hair is a symbol of femininity. Latin women pride themselves on their long luscious hair and I was no exception. My hair reached my waist and it would wrap my shoulders as well as sit in a pineapple shaped mountain on top of my head. I loved my hair and it was source of pride and compliments.
However, I felt the urge for change. I had chopped my hair before. I rocked a pixie cut for a couple of years and I actually even had half of my head shaved. Short hair made me feel sporty, powerful, and my angular face seemed to sharpen without the soft tresses framing my face. So, after a long five years of growing my hair I decided that I wanted to do another big chop. A refresh.
I cut my own hair in September 2019 with a pair of barber scissors off of Amazon, my bedroom mirror, and a reference photo off of Pinterest. The sharp sound of scissors to hair was an empowering one. The process felt like a rebirth and the smile of the girl in the mirror grew steadily. I emerged from my makeshift hair salon with the following greetings, "You did that yourself?! You're crazy! You're brave!".
The "french bob" cut awakened my curls and I feel like it captures my personality. Its spunky, a little out of control, and unpredictable. I love it and see myself keeping it for awhile.
